This exquisite vintage throne has its roots in Tanzania. It is arguably one of the most striking reflection of Nyamwezi art, known for both its history and its aesthetic qualities. Stools with high carved backs were reserved for Chiefs, generally revealing male and female attributes.
This stool has a human figure carved on the dorsal side of the high back, with head and hands projecting from the edge of the backrest as if to embrace or protect the occupant of the throne, which is very typical of this design.
Call it art, call it history, call it design, call it fabulous!
